Benefits and Risks

Although a considerable body of research points towards the effectiveness of group therapy for the treatment of a range of difficulties and for improving emotional and social skills, all forms of therapy have potential benefits and potential discomforts. They are outlined here:

Potential Benefits:

  • Feeling less alone with their struggles
  • Learning new ways to cope with emotions
  • Building friendships and social confidence
  • Learning in a safe, child friendly environment
  • Reduced distress and symptoms

Potential Discomforts:

  • Talking about feelings can sometimes be uncomfortable or upsetting but can be a form of healing.
  • Other group members may share private stories they don’t want repeated outside the group but this will be contained in a professional manner as far as possible.

Voluntary Participation and Right to Withdraw

Your child’s participation in the group is voluntary. Please discuss their participation with them, before deciding to enroll them.  You may decide to end your child’s participation early if you feel further attendance is not in your child’s best interest. Should the therapist decide that continued participation is no longer in your child’s best interest, this will be discussed with you.

Individual Therapy

Please note that the group therapy program is not a substitute for individual psychotherapy. Should we as the therapist feel that your child may benefit from further interventions, to complement the group therapy, the therapist(s) will discuss this with you as the parent.

Confidentiality

  • Confidentiality is a priority to us.
  • Your child’s privacy and confidentiality will be protected by the therapist. Please take note of the following exceptions to confidentiality that all psychologists are expected to adhere to: a) in public interest where the individual is at risk of harming him/herself or another individual; b) in reporting the abuse of a minor child; c) in the event of a court order requires the release of information.
  • Group members are expected to uphold each other's privacy. Children will be reminded not to share personal stories outside the group. This being said, the therapist cannot guarantee other group members will maintain confidentiality, although this is strongly emphasized and required as a condition of participation.
  • At Danni Dinocorn, we are passionate about what we do and improving on how we do it. For research and development purposes, data from the group may be used to enhance the program materials. However, no individual will be named or identified and no data would be linked to an individual, thus adhering to the principle of anonymity.

  • Parents/guardians will not be present in the group during sessions.
  • You are always welcome to contact the therapist with concerns or questions.
  • Please assist your child with their home practice activity after each session.
  • Some of the home practice activities include psycho-education – information shared with you as a parent to equip you with greater understanding and skill in assisting your child.
